Almost each month Greek schools take a day off in which we either walk to nearby places of interest such as museums and theatres or go to the movies. Last month (on the 25th of November) we watched the film Entre les murs with some of our students. Many schools in Athens had already seen this film in the morning shows scheduled for students only.
This movie deals with the will to learn and the right to free expression. François Begadeau (the star of the film who actually plays his role in real life as a teacher) and his colleagues begin the new school year in a high school of a working class neighbourhood in France.
They have to face difficult situations and use all their powers to teach. The main character tries to maintain an atmosphere of respect and mutual decency in a classroom where different attitudes contrive to make things difficult. He seems to have the best intentions, until one student puts his methods to the test by doubting him.
This film was directed by Laurent Cantet and won the Golden Phoenix in the Cannes Film Festival in 2008. (English title: The Class, France 2008, Drama)
