Listen

Listen, LISTEN

When you listen you affirm me but your listening must be real sensitive and serious not looking busily around not with a worried or distracted frown not preparing what you are going to say next but giving me your full attention.

You are telling me i am a person of value important and worth listening to one with whom you will share yourself.

I have ideas to share feelings which i too often keep to myself deep questions which struggle inside me for answers I have hopes only tentatively acknowledged which are not easy to share and pain and guilt and fear i try to stifle

These are sensitive areas and a real part of me but it takes courage to confide in another
I need to listen too if we are to become close How can i tell you i understand? I can show interest with my eyes or an occasional word attuned to pick up not only spoken words but aloso the glimmer of a smile a look of pain, the hesitation, the struggle which may suggest something as yet too deep for words

So let us take time together respecting the others freedom encouraging without hurrying understanding that some things may never be brought to light but others may emerge if given time

Each through this listening, enriches the other with the priceless gift of intimacy.

My first hour at school

George , Lefteris , Alex , Christos

We feel happy, because we meet our friends and talk! When we have to take an exam we are nervous!
Firstly, we begin at 8.15am. For first hour we usually have Ancient Greek, Greek Language and Physics.
We don’t find these lessons very difficult. In fact they are very interesting.
When we start the lesson, the teacher asks questions to check our previous lesson’s knowledge. Then the teacher teaches us the next lesson. At the end the teacher gives us homework.
If the lesson is interesting and important we pay attention. If we don’t care about this lesson,we feel bored!!!

First hour at school

Every day at school is different. Nearly every day the first hour is ancient Greek which is interesting. I like it very much. Most of the students in my classroom appreciate our teacher’s work. We attend this subject 6 hours a week. Every day I am looking forward to this lesson. Ancient Greek is like a foreign language to us. I think the reason I like this lesson so much is because I have learnt it so good. I believe that Ancient Greek is an important lesson because we learn about Ancient Greece. We are informed about the habits of Ancient Greeks and the conditions of their living. It is important to know our history because we learn about the mistakes we have done and we don’t repeat them.

My first hour at school

Before the lesson begins I feel really bored because i know that I will be obligated to participate in another dull day at my school! Nevertheless I always change my mind during the first hour… Most of the days we have Ancient Greek .It’s a really interesting lesson because we can learn about our ancestors and we also became aware of the origin of our civilization! The process is a bit common… We acquire more by doing some exercises of grammar, syntax and translation in Ancient Greek texts! This year we study texts of the ancient Greek historiographers Xenofontas and Thoukididis! On Tuesday we have a P.E. which we really enjoy!!!

First hour at school

Before the lesson begins all students feel very stressed. In the first hour we usually have maths which is very difficult especially algebra. Our usual way of working is with certain teaching methods such as the writing on the blackboard. In my opinion this way of working is traditional and old- fashioned. My attitude towards this lesson is negative. Although this lesson and this mood is worse than before they start.

First hour at school

First of all, before the lesson begins we feel bored as we go to school early in the morning (8.15 am). However, we usually feel better after the first hour at school. On Monday, Thursday and Friday we have chemistry which we find really interesting. In addition, on Tuesday and Wednesday we have physics. We usually enjoy our first hour at school especially when we have a chemistry lesson which is a rather amazing lesson for us. Unfortunately, we almost never use computers at school. Our teacher teaches the lesson and asks the students some questions. Also, sometimes the teacher chooses one of the students to solve an exercise on the board. Most of us find these lessons quite interesting and very useful. To sum up, after our first hour at school we usually feel better, but tired too, and we are ready to continue our school day in a good mood!!!

Our school football championship

This year, like every year, a championship is held in our school. Every class chooses its team which consists of 6 members (girls and boys alike). Every match, which is divided in 2 parts, lasts 20 minutes. Every part lasts 10 minutes (during the third and the fourth break). The referee is a student too. All the students are very excited about the school football championship as football is very popular. The winning team is the champion of our school!!!
This year , the C3 class (of the third class of high school) as well as the B3(2nd class ) and C5(3rd class) are likely to win.

Football

In our school we have different teams! For example we have a football team in which I participate wth 15 other schoolmates: Vangelis (x3), Thanassis, Giannis, Fotis, Marios, Michalis, Konstadinos, Dimitris, Manolis!
We train every day for 2 hours at a court near our school with our trainer! During the training we ran at first for 10 minutes to warm up and, after that, we continued with exercise for reflection! We played 5 matches and we won 4 of them! In the last match we lost on penalties and as a result we took the second place of the group…! Anyway we don’t feel sad because we were not looking for the win just for the experience!

Volleyball

I am Una and I am a member of our school volleyball team. Our school has a volleyball team in which any student can participate. In order to do that, the trainer needs to choose only 16 students from the whole school, 8 girls and 8 boys. We train twice a week. Usually, in February our games start. We play against other schools from our city and if we win, we qualify for the next round and afterwards for the championship.

I am Aggelikh and I am member of our school volleyball team. The team needs 12 girls. Our first game is on Monday 19/1/2009 . We need the victory because the boys of volleyball team tastes the lost.

Unfortunatelly we lost in the first game.It doesn't matter, we did our best, we are going to practice hard to become better and to win the next game. It was a fair play. I believe that the girls during tha game they 're having fun but....always there is a but....

Weightlifting

My name is Chris and I am a member of a Greek weightlifting team in Athens. Weightlifting is a sport in which participants attempt a maximum weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates. Weightlifting requires a combination of power (strength and speed), technique, flexibility and consistency. A weightlifter's strength comes primarily from the legs, and secondarily the back, anterior core, and shoulders. I train almost every day for two or three hours with my friends! Firstly we warm up and we run for 5 min! After the warm up, we count our weight and we start our training from the same weights we lifted the previous time we had training! After the training we have a quick bath and then we leave! But it is not over, because we have to watch what we eat…

Sports at our school

This week we are focusing on sports that take place at our school.

Our school has participated in the school boys championship in two sports: basketball and football. The main goal is participation and fair play, good behaviour of students and demonstration of good character and, secondly, achievement and victories. Both groups achieved several victories and advanced to a satisfactory level, especially given that they had to compete with students of sports schools.

Today our students are going to describe some of our sport activities.

In the following weeks, we will add more information on this topic.

Myths about the first olympic games

The ancient Greeks thought that the first Games in Olympia were organized by heroes and gods. In his first Olympic Ode, dated to the fifth century BC, Pindar tells us about Pelops, the founder of the Games. Pelops, the son of Tantalus, came from Asia Minor to participate to a chariot race organized by Oinomaos, the king of Pisa in the Peloponnese. Oinomaos was told of an oracle according to which the marriage of his daughter Hippodameia would cause his death. Thus, he ordered his people to kill all the suitors who came to participate in the game. However, Pelops insidiously killed Oinomaos during the race and ended up marring Hippodameia. As king of the area, he was the first to organize the games to purify himself or, according to another version, to thank the gods for his victory. The organization of the chariot race was illustrated in the eastern pediment of the temple of Zeus in the 5th century BC. In the same way, Hippodameia instituted the Heraean games for the same reason. These were running games, conducted every four years and restricted uniquely to maidens.
The Idaean Heracles is another heroic figure associated to the first Games. Heracles came with his brothers Kouretes from Crete, defined the length of the stadium at Olympia, organized a foot race with his brothers and crowned the victor with a wreath of wild olive leaves. Pindar also records that it was Theban Heracles, the son of Zeus who brought the wild olive from the Hyperborean countries, founded the foot race, introduced the cult of Zeus and determined the boundaries of the Sacred Altis.
The historian Strabo reports that the descendants of Heracles (the Herakleidai) first organized the games, after the spread of the Aitolian and Dorian groups to Pisa. According to this interpretation, the Aetolian groups who conquered Pisa settled there under their leader Oxylus in the Late Mycenean period, ca. 1200-1100 BC. This occupation led to conflicts with the indigenous people, as indicated by the later antagonism between Eleans who migrated from Aetolia, and Pisatans. According to an Elean myth, Zeus took control of the sanctuary and founded the games.

Ancient Olympic events

The ancient Olympic Games, part of a major religious festival honoring Zeus, the chief Greek god, were the biggest event in their world. They were the scene of political rivalries between people from different parts of the Greek world, and the site of controversies, boasts, public announcements and humiliations.

The ancient Olympics were rather different from the modern Games. There were fewer events, and only free men who spoke Greek could compete, instead of athletes from any country. Also, the games were always held at Olympia instead of moving around to different sites every time.
